What is self-belief and how does it work?
“Don’t limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, remember, you can achieve. You know more than you think you do.” — Benjamin Spock
Self-belief is a positive state of mind and self-respect towards yourself and your true potential. It lays the foundation on which success and prosperity are built. Furthermore, self-belief makes you realize you are unbeatable, unstoppable and unconquerable.
The perception you build based on several different external or internal references lay the foundation of your way of thinking about yourself and the world around. Consistent repetition of affirmation confirms your belief system to be true and starts creating the fact.
For example, you have often hear some people say “I am not intelligent.”
For example, you have often hear some people say “I am not intelligent.”
What leads them into such a belief? It could be one of the following:
1. They have failed to perform well in exams
2. They fail to express themselves in a clear and assertive manner.
3. They have failed to prove their intelligence
4. They have heard it from friends or people around
2. They fail to express themselves in a clear and assertive manner.
3. They have failed to prove their intelligence
4. They have heard it from friends or people around
When such references come on a regular basis, they impact your belief system and you acknowledge yourself accordingly.
How powerful the belief system is?
The profundity and intensity of your faith in yourself determines your personality with which you influence your as well as others’ lives. But if the references somehow convince you that you are not intelligent, what actually happens is your self-belief kills your intelligence. Let’s take a closer and considerate look at some examples:
1. When I stumbled upon the story about Felix Baumgartner who has become the first man in history to jump from the Stratosphere, I wondered about the depth and strength of his self-belief he holds for himself. How could he think he could do such an impossible task whereas he himself suffered from acrophobia (Fear of heights) in his young days. Many people thought him to be crazy and many others thought he had no fear of death? Even the troops told him to wait till the next day because of bad weather.
He feared the height as a young boy but conquered it with sheer self-belief and self-motivation. He could jump from the Stratosphere because he believed he could make it. He created history by working on his believe system.

2. Dashrath Manjhi, a landless farmer who slit a 300-feet-high hill apart to create a one-km passage. In early 1959, he started hammering the hill in the memory of his beloved wife. He consistently hammered the hill for 22-long-years to tear a 300-feet-high hill apart and created a one-km passage to end the miseries of his villagers. His self-belief made him do the impossible.
When he started the gigantic task, every villager thought him to be mad and crazy but their words did nothing to him. Nobody accomplished such a crazy and possibly impossible task before, then what inspired him to go for it? It was his firm belief in himself that led him to this impossible accomplishment.
3. Popular as the Airman, Jetman, and Rocketman Yves Rossy is the first person to show the possibilities of human flight with a jet-powered wing attached to the back. In 2006, he developed a jet-powered 2.4 metres long wings with four engines and first flew it in Bex for six minutes and nine seconds. His courageous and daring experiments and invincible belief in himself to search for a sustainable human flight inspired him for this unfeasible accomplishment.
It is the belief system that makes you stand apart from the crowd and achieve the impossible. It inspires you to become the unstoppable and initiates you to dream the unconquerable.
How belief system can make a big difference?
Belief system works quite powerfully, it can create you as well as destroy you. An example can clarify the fact.
There was a man who was drug addict, alcoholic, cruel and criminal with all sort of bad habits and instincts. He had two sons- one was quite like him who was sentenced years of jail for stealing things, threatening people and attempting to murders. The other one was completely opposite. Despite having unfortunate childhood and drug addict father, he believed he could be different and his fallibilities, errors, weaknesses of childhood could be changed. He was famous for being so humble, down-to-earth and possessed a pleasing personality. He was living a healthy life with loving family.
How can two persons be so different and poles apart with opposite characteristics while they both were brought up in the same adverse family condition?
It was their different self-beliefs. The first son’s life was determined by the circumstances he grew up in and he thought he had no other way except becoming like his father, therefore he became like him. The second son’s life was determined his unbreakable faith that led his actions which determined the results despite having come from the similar circumstances. It is faith and self-belief that can make a really big difference.

Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani, an Indian industrialist, was widely known as founder of Indian conglomerate multinational Reliance Industries. The company, has been featured on the Fortune 500, is a conglomeration of communications, petrochemicals, power, and textiles. Dhirubhai Ambani’s life is a real rags-to-riches success story.
Born to a school teacher, he was the third of five siblings, three brothers and two sisters. Ever since childhood, Dhirubhai was more keen on work than studies and repeatedly bunked classes and roamed in streets, watching people work and making money. He’d once said his mother to stop lamenting about the hardships and that he would make “heaps of money one day.” His entrepreneurial career began in his early school years by selling “bhajias” to pilgrims in Mount Girnar over the weekends. On completion of his school studies, his brother Ramnikbhai sent him to Aden, Yemen, which was the second busiest oil banking and trading port of the time.
Dhirubhai Ambani joined the largest transcontinental trading firm named A.Besse & Co as a gas-station attendant, as well as a dispatch clerk. A.Besse & Co would deal in every possible branch of trading from cargo booking, shipping, handling, forwarding, to wholesale merchandising for a great number of American, European, African and Asian companies. His hard work promoted him to maintain and manage company`s oil filling station at the port of Aden. Dhirubhai once said, “More than anything else I learnt that nothing big can ever be achieved without money, influence and power and I also learnt that money, influence and power alone cannot achieve anything in life, big or small, without a certain soft, delicate, sensitive, understanding human touch in all one’s deeds and words.” In 1958, he came back to India with Rs 50,000 and started the business of polyester yarn import-export at Masjid Bunder of South Mumbai and later founded the Reliance Commercial Corporation with an investment of 15,000. Back in those days Polyester was in great demand across Asian markets and soon his profit skyrocketed. Dhirubhai continued to live in one bedroom flat with his wife and children for almost a decade until 1968 when he moved to Altamount Road in South Mumbai. In 1966, Dhirubhai started his own textiles manufacturing unit at at Naroda, in Ahmedabad. He launched his first brand “Vimal” sometime in 1969-70; and in 1975, his manufacturing was visited by a team of technical experts from the World Bank who certified it as “excellent even by developed country standards.”
The biggest breakthrough in his life came in the year 1977, when he managed to attract over 58,000 investors in the very first IPO of Relience Commercial Corporation; and he never looked back ever since. A humble beginning helped him to stand his empire worth $64 billion.
He has been honored for several times for his significant contributions. In 1998 The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania honored him with Dean’s Medal for his excellent leadership. In 1996, 1998, and 2000 Asiaweek magazine featured him among ‘Power 50 – the most powerful people in Asia. In 2001 Economic Times honored him with Economic Times Awards for Corporate Excellence for Lifetime Achievement and many more.
Dhirubhai built up a textile and Petrochemicals Empire with his dedication, ability to recognize new business opportunities, dare to take risk, never-give-up attitude and intelligence to handle people.
Dhirubhai Ambani Quotes:
“Our dreams have to be bigger. Our ambitions higher. Our commitment deeper. And our efforts greater. This is my dream for Reliance and for India.”
“Think big, think fast, think ahead. Ideas are no one’s monopoly”
“Pursue your goals even in the face of difficulties, and convert adversities into opportunities.”
“Give the youth a proper environment. Motivate them. Extend them the support they need. Each one of them has infinite source of energy. They will deliver.”

After the test is over, revise all the answers and see where you have made mistakes and what all questions you could have easily answered but couldn’t. This would help you in improving your score in subsequent tests that you would take.
One month before the exam, evaluated your strengths and weaknesses: This would help you in formulating your strategy for the ‘BIG DAY’. Let say, if I found that I am relatively weaker in English as compared to other sections, I would allocate more time for English while giving the test as I need to score a minimum cut-off marks in English to pass the exam.
We should also not forget that marks scored in the written exam have almost 80% weight age in the final selection. Hence, scoring more is equally important as qualifying all the sections of the paper. So, you need to score as much as you can in your stronger section.
Once you have made your strategy, start taking 2 tests per week in the month before the exam.
Practice, Practice and more practice: Practice makes a man perfect it is said and this is definitely not without reason. More the time spent in practicing, better is the efficiency in the examination. Higher the efforts prior to the examination, better is the efficiency during the examination.
Hence, a serious contender who is keen to land a job in banking needs to put in hours and hours of hard work, which has the ability of providing rewards in multiples.
The practice must be well directed: For any examination, practice has to be focused and in line with the requirements.
A professional guidance in understanding the areas which require practice will go a long way in making one better equipped to crack the bank examination.
Strategies and Plan: It’s better to decide that from which section you have to start the exam before appearing in the exam and how much time you have to spend on each section.
